Students at MacKillop Catholic College in Palmerston will start the school year with a new basketball court thanks to the Catholic Church of the Diocese of Darwin, the Australian Government and the joint partnership of the Land Development Corporation and Urbex.

The basketball court, which was completed over the school holidays, will be ready for use and launched tomorrow by the Bishop of Darwin Eugene Hurley, Deputy Director of School Services, Catholic Education Greg O’Mullane, Federal Member for Solomon Natasha Griggs MP and Zuccoli Independent Chairman Michael Corcoran.

Completed by JMac Constructions, the basketball court is valued at $300,000 and funded by the Federal Government, the Catholic Diocese and Urbex, local developers of stage one of Zuccoli, in partnership with the Land Development Corporation.

Bishop Hurley said that the new facility would add to the foundation of the community.

“The vision for the MacKillop Catholic College community involves a strong community participation in vibrant, caring and compassionate activities.

“As a new school located in a new and growing suburb we have limited facilities for students and families. This basketball court provides a much-needed resource for students during the school day and a place for families, clubs and young people to play after school hours.

“MacKillop Catholic College was built at the beginning of 2012 and from that point in time has had as its focus to be a school for the community. Its strong sense of welcome and inclusiveness is overwhelming to all who come to this place,” he said.

Natasha Griggs MP, Federal Member for Solomon, added how heart warming it is to see the local community flourish and the students of MacKillop College excel in their new surroundings and facilities.

“Helping provide a facility such as this is at the heart of what we do, the joint funding aims to provide better facilities for those that live in the suburb and study at the school” Mrs Griggs said.

Zuccoli Independent Chairman Michael Corcoran said it was exciting to see the area develop and the community grow.

“It has been a pleasure working with the school to develop the basketball court. This project presented an opportunity to not only build on the facilities of the school but also for the residents of Zuccoli and the local community. We look forward to working on future projects together,” Mr Corcoran said.

The new basketball court will be launched on Friday 12 February, at the MacKillop Catholic College at 9.30am, and will include a basketball demonstration by young talent from the College.
