Urbex has received an Environmental Excellence award at the 2018 Queensland Urban Development Institute of Australia Awards for its boutique development Minnippi.

BMD companies Urbex, Empower, BMD Urban and JMAC landscaping came together to develop this award-winning project, showcasing the unique vertically integrated group.
Located in the suburb of Cannon Hill just 11 kilometres from the Brisbane CBD, Minnippi is a masterplanned community developed by Urbex in partnership with the Brisbane City Council.

Urbex General Manager, Peter Sherrie said the project has been thoughtfully planned, paying homage to the unique landscape and stunning surrounds.
Key environmental highlights in the near-CBD community showcase the flawless blend of residential homesites, nestled amongst over 110 hectares of open space, environmental habitat, parkland and a future public golf course.

Minnippi Project Director, Andrew Bartington said he is thrilled Urbex has been recognised for the development, with stakeholders having worked tirelessly to ensure the sites fauna and flora communities are improved over the course of the development. Development of just ten percent of the site area has funded the environmental works recognised by this award as well as a future public golf course and further environmental works.

From design to delivery Urbex has enhanced the environment with 80,000 native plants planted to date and hundreds of trees saved through detailed earthworks modelling and the implementation of restricted work zones. In the core habitat areas over 30 hectares of lantana and other invasive weed species have also been cleared.

This approach to minimising impact and maximising habitat development, along with installing nest boxes, fauna poles and monitoring cameras has been undertaken to minimise potential construction impacts on the resident Squirrel Glider colony.

Keeping a close eye on the Squirrel Glider colony is Dr Ross Goldingay of Southern Cross University, a PHD student funded by the project for three and a half years to research and monitor the sites population and habitat.

Minnippi has created many social, environmental and economic benefits to the wider Brisbane community, substantially improving the areas amenity. Upon completion, the project will have doubled the sites Squirrel Glider habitat to 60 hectares and the residential component will provide 160 homesites featuring housing designs by some of Brisbane’s most prestigious builders.
